Boccherini

Boccherini composed the first version of his "Stabat mater" in 1781 at the request of the Infante Don Luis in remote Arenas de San Pedro where they both lived in exile. A high degree of emotional as well as religious empathy seems to have existed between the composer and his patron. Don Luis showed particular respect for the Madonna and even carried around a small portrait of her at all times. In humble modesty he refused to be embalmed altought this was the normal practice for deceased members of the royal family. Boccherini himself was even buried in a Franciscan monk's habit.
