Das Oratorium in drei Akten wurde am 1. April 1747 im Theater Royal, Covent Garden in London uraufgeführt, der Erfolg war enorm.
Es war das erste Libretto, das Reverend Thomas Morell (1703-1781) für Händel geschrieben hatte.

Unter der Leitung von Heinz Ferlesch sind zu hören: das Barockensemble Barucco, die Wiener Singakademie, Cornelia Horak, Hermine Haselböck, Thomas Kühne, Daniel Johannsen, Klemens Sander und Günter Friedrich.
