"Der wunderbare Mandarin" (op. 19, Sz 73) ist Bartóks letztes Bühnenwerk. Die Handlung dreht sich um Prostitution, Brutalität, Raub, Mord, Außenseitertum, (unerfüllte) Liebe und schließlich, als Katharsis, eine Art Liebestod. Die Musik ist über weite Strecken von unerbittlicher Schärfe, grell dissonant, radikal, die wohl modernste Partitur, die Bartók schuf. Die Uraufführung (1926) in Köln war ein Skandal und Konrad Adenauer, seinerzeit Oberbürgermeister von Köln, setzte das Stück daraufhin unverzüglich ab.
