...entstand 1736, in einer Zeit, da Händel dem schwindenden Interesse an seinen italienischen Opern mit Oratorien in englischer Sprache zu begegnen versuchte. Tatsächlich gelang ihm mit diesem Werk, das einem Oratorium nahe steht, eine Komposition, die auf Anhieb ungeteilten Zuspruch fand und alsbald zusammen mit dem "Messiah" zu seinen beliebtesten Schöpfungen zählte. Zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten wurden nur "Acis and Galatea" sowie "Messiah" häufiger aufgeführt als "Alexander's Feast".
